On Wednesday the 10th of December 2025 the Victorian State Government celebrated the official opening of the brand-new Banyul-Warri Hockey Pitch in Torquay – a world-class facility that will serve the local hockey community for generations to come.
Delivered through the Victorian Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Program, the project features a new synthetic pitch, lighting, scoreboard, spectator seating and upgraded parking – giving the Torquay Tornadoes Hockey Club a true home base to train, play and grow.
One of the most powerful moments was seeing Wadawurrung artist Billy-Jay O’Toole’s artwork woven into the Poligras Platinum World Cup surface, honouring connection to Country and the strong sense of community that defines this place.
This pitch is Victoria’s first non-sand dressed dry turf – the same surface selected for the 2026 Hockey World Cup – and a huge step forward for hockey across the Surf Coast and greater Geelong region.
Thanks to the Victorian State Government and the Surf Coast Shire Council for your support. Also thanks to Hockey Victoria, Hockey Geelong, Polytan and everyone involved in bringing this incredible project to life. This is fantastic win for Torquay Hockey Club and community sport.
